I was just going to chalk this up to being a Scott #602 coil with a coil machine precancel #162. However, upon closer examination, there is a distinct gap between the "BAL" and "TIMORE" in the city name.

Is this just a printing fluke or is it a listed variety of this precancel?

I don't see any listings describing this in any of my precancel catalogues. If you look at the spacing between the "I" and "M", you can see considerable variation there, too. It looks like the type of printing variations you get from individually setting type glyphs. I don't have the old Gunesch coil precancel catalogue - apparently it includes some information on the machines used to print these coil precancels, perhaps there's something there regarding the typeface.

Looking at this I see a faded tail of the 'L' & the top of the 'T' also faded or poor impression at the right top! Visually making the gapp larger then it really is, matter what it is a Type 162.
