This Scott 482 Mint OGnh is PSE-graded Gem 100J. I can understand collectors wanting to get well-centered stamps but can anyone explain to me why someone would destroy eight other stamps in order to acheive the Gem grade? Steve

What else do you do if you have a block of nine that is tattered and foxed at the edges? |

These were sometimes referred to as a "framed jumbos" prior to the numerical grading phenomenon. Over the decades, they were sold by a number of East Coast dealers who specialized in premium items. They are prized by some collectors, and are also harshly criticized by other collectors.
I have to admit, the first time I saw one, my eyes were wide open and I was thinking "WOW". Never made one, never owned one, and likely never will. They were also made with perforate stamps, not just imperforate; although the imperforate framed jumbos are more impressive. |

Never in my life have I seen something like that, I agree why destroy 8 other stamps for one premium. Are there any Penny Black "framed jumbos" out there ? |

Economics This difference in price is $2.60 for a VF Mint and $32.50 for Sup98
He will get much more money for that 1 stamp then he could have gotten for all 9. Someone will pay $50.00 for that stamp. |

SV, I received it gratis from the seller as his way of making amends for delays in shipping other items I had purchased from him.
He did say that I'd be surprised when I received my material and he was definitely right on that score! |

I would trim it, lick it and stick it on an envelope and mail it to myself, then soak and float it.Hmmmmm, I wonder how a spray on cancel would look on that.I could market it as a secret trial cancel from World War I. |

Quote: I think my bug bear is why not keep all 9 stamps intact surely all 9 in the block would be worth more? There are plenty of multiples, part sheets, and full panes lying around. I've got a part sheet as well, although I never cut a framed jumbo from it -- only blocks of 4. It's a lot easier to sell a framed jumbo than it is to sell a block of 9, and you would get more from the framed jumbo. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just telling it as it is from the dealer's perspective. |
