OK, I'm reading this with interest, but I am confused, or am I missing something? Why would someone pay more for a "framed jumbo" than a block of nine, when you could buy a block of nine and cut it yourself if you wanted? Have I got this all wrong?

I think it has to do with the imperforate stamps more than the perforated ones. Kind of proves that it is actually imperforate beyond the shadow of a doubt?

With a wee bit of overkill thrown in too, me thinks, aye, har de har harr, off with his head, ar.

As far as the economic calculation goes, don't forget that this stamp was PSE-graded.

As I understand the PSE fee structure, for a stamp of this age, the grading cost is 6% of SCV with a minimum fee of $32.

which is why he did it or got it from someone who did.
People see a PSE and go nuts.. Some buyers won't buy unless it is pse graded..
And I have seen some strange PSE certs...
Genuine, regummed, reperfed at left..
saw one like that and they seller was asking a SCV for a XF MINT NH..
I wrote to him and said what are you thinking? It is regummed which is the same as no gum for grading. It is reperfed, a major fault, all this alone subtracts about 75% of the SCV...

Some people. "expertly regummed" I like that phrase.. like it's worth more then a NG stamp...

These framed jumbos existed long before the PSE grading. They made them for both imperforate and perforate stamps. I just thumbed through some 1980s-1990s color sales catalogs from East Coast sellers and I see mostly imperforate framed jumbos, but scattered perforate framed jumbos.

Yes, you could make your own -- but most collectors don't. They'd rather the dealer do it in case they make any cutting mistakes. Also, it's not as easy as you may think to find a block of 9 MNH stamps that have near perfect centering (for perforate stamps) and no blemishes on either the face or the gum. I remember looking at my part sheet, and realizing that if I did do something like that, I could only find 1-2 spots that would qualify. Another dealer trick is that you don't really need a block of 9 perfect stamps -- the stamps that make the frame only have to be perfect up to the part that is cut.

It is one way to try and increase the value of the stamp. After all this is a low value stamp both MNH and used.

If it wasn't such a low valued stamp I could come up with a few reasons. Since you destroyed 8 other stamps you have decrease the total amount of the stamps that would be on the market. Thus making yours a little more rare.
