Poor eyesight? Doesn't really know what a secret mark is? Can't see it under the cancellation? Dishonest? Only he or she knows, but it definitely has a secret mark.
For this particular issue, the "secret mark" is that in the pearl to the left of the numeral "1" there is a small crescent. (If you click on the stamp above to blow up the image you'll see it much easier.)
According to Scott Specialized, the object of secret marks was to provide simple and positive proof that these stamps were produced by the Continental Bank Note Company (Scott #156) and not their predecessors (which in this instance would have been the National Bank Note Company (Scott #145)).
i found out after I bought the stamp, I had asked him to check it before he sent it, but he didn't look close enough. I am returning this one, he is sending me a legit 145. The seller has been very good, I would not avoid him because of this 1 incident. Actually I bought more things from him after this auction.
