Stamp #1 Scott #29 has a projection at top and bottom. Yours does not. Stamp #2 Should be #10 or 11 Stamp #3 Should be #17 or a trimmed #36 Stamp #4 is not #254, 254 has triangles in the corners #222 does not.
This is based on a quick look. The #'s I gave you should be checked. |

The 5c is a reperfed 30a, the 3c is a #11, the 12c is a #36 with trimmed perfs (You can see, especially if you look at the reverse, two perf notches) and the 4c is a #222, aka "Small Banknote". |

billw2: I was just looking at that 30a and thinking the perfs looked really wrong. I agree with your assessment of the perfs.
I also thought "11" on the second stamp the instant I saw it, but I remembered there are a few different versions of the 11. I believe there were a few different printings, and the border lines were recut each time. So there sub-groupings for 11. Also, the only distinction between 11 and 12 (or was it 10 and 11?) is a shade of color.
As for the 12c, someone butchered that thing IMO.
I gotta ask: Does the "W2" in your handle stand for Chief Warrant? |

Well, The 5c Ty2s don't tend to come very well centered, but those margins are, shall we say, a bit too close ;) There's actually a lot of differences between #10s and #11s, (Although I read that Scott changed the numbers on them somewhat recently). Basically, only certain plates produced Orange Browns, and those plates weren't used to produce #11s. Also, Orange Browns were only really in use for about 10 months. Wait, here's the site I was looking for! http://home.comcast.net/~3cent1851/ob.htmOh, and my name means I am Bill W the 2nd, my dad was Bill W the first, he had a great 10c 61 collection and growing up with him is how I got into Philately. |
