Based on some old precancel material, this precancel would seem to match a U-84 (universal type guide). I'm not certain how that corresponds with the generally accepted guides of today. Can anyone provide me with up-to-date information?

I find it interesting, as it is one of the few that has both city and state printed continually on both lines (in this case, "New York, N.Y.").

Here's a conversion chart from the old Noble / Hoover Universal types to the PSS style numbers. U-84 is a generic type for local overprints.

In the PSS catalogue, you have one of the variants of style L-15. There are 7 variants, differing in the gap between lines and the gap between town & state.

Thanks, Ryan. I do have that conversion chart, I just wasn't sure that it was the right one because of the "U" prefix in the old "universal" chart. If there are seven (7) variants of the style L-15, as you suggest, I guess I need a catalog to properly identify the particular stamp I posted.

Frankly, I've never found it worthwhile to pay for and store all of the precancel catalogs out there, as I'd rather put the money into the stamps and albums for storage, as there are seldom any precancels that are worth much more than a few cents.

L-15 HS Var 1 - 1 mm between town & state, 13.5 mm between lines
L-15 HS Var 2 - 2 mm between town & state, 15 mm between lines
L-15 HS Var 3 - 2 mm between town & state, 16 mm between lines
L-15 HS Var 4 - 2.5 mm between town & state, 16 mm between lines
L-15 HS Var 5 - 3 mm between town & state, 16.5 mm between lines
L-15 HS Var 6 - 2 mm between town & state, 14 mm between lines
L-15 HS Var 7 - 2.5 mm between town & state, 15 mm between lines

There are no price differences indicated for the variants. However, there is a rare error that occurs in one position on the handstamp, on which the state is abbreviated "N.V.", with a considerable premium for this error.

For my part, I am a catalogue collector as well as a stamp collector. As soon as I get enough copies of something, I'm looking to find a catalogue for them. I have a small mountain of precancels and I keep buying more piles, so I guess I can justify a small mountain of catalogues to go along with them. ha ha

Thanks for the info. on the different L-15 variants. I'll check it against my stamp and see what I find out.
