I know there are several possibilities for a stamp such as this:

I'm leaning toward it being a 148, primarily because of its color (carmine) and the fact that it has no grill.

Would you agree or are there other possibilities?

Thanks for the link! I don't think it has a "secret mark" ... I know it doesn't have a grill ... and it certainly is a much brighter color red (excuse me, carmine) than the alternatives, so the #148 fits.

Thanks again.

Is it hard paper? The color sure looks like National printing (137 & 148). The 159 is normally the dull pink.

The shading in the lower left ribbon doesn't appear to have been strengthened so I think you're correct in calling it 148.

Here's a good guide to help you identify the 6c Large Banknotes.

The quickest way is to look at the paper. Hold the stamp up to bright light, does the paper look woven or mottled? If so it's soft paper.

billw2,

Thanks for posting that link -- a very useful example of soft paper.

Yes! Thanks for posting this guide, billw2, it confirms for me that my stamp is the #148 (no grill and without secret mark).
