I sent a goiloid coin out to get it graded and authenticated, but are there places to send stamps to see if they're legit? There seems to be a lot of the european stamps that people in this forum site say are probable fakes that I have asked about.

There are many people who will authenticate stamps..do you read any philatelic papers or magazines ? They value their time and knowledge $$$$ ..its like hiring a lawyer for a dispute with your neighbor..what are you are willing to spend vs. what you might recoup ! |

Their are also a number of Specialty Group Authenticators. For example Germany and states it's the GPS Especially on big $$ stamps. No Serious German Collector would touch one without a GPS Certificate. For Italy and States the go to guy is Sergio Sismondo. |

I probably should have added that Many of the early forgeries were NOT made to defraud collectors. But, rather the Postal Authorities. Also MANY of the Forgeries are FAR from worthless. For example Many Moens Forgeries are More valuable than the originals! |

Quote: Same with the Sperati's. Very true! I have seen a number of Sperati Forgeries go for BIG $$. You also can't forget Fournier's Forgeries. Just as an example From Sotheby's 2007, 18 Sperati Forgeries Sold for 3680.00 GBP + Fees |

While it is true that some forgeries are known to sell for more than the genuine stamps, this is a rare exception, not the rule. The great majority of forgeries/counterfeits are worth pennies each at most; this includes many of Fournier's plentiful forgeries. He was quite prolific in his production of forgeries. While there are still quite a few forgeries/counterfeits that will fetch a few bucks each, it is pretty unusual for a forgery to fetch $10+ or $100+ each. Even then, the genuine stamp is usually worth even more. On a rare occasion, a specific forgery will fetch $1000+.
The forgeries mentioned/shown in the above posts are very specific forgeries and are considered rarities. (Great examples and pic, revstampman!) Most of the time, the buyers are those who specialize in forgeries. And yes, there are those who specialize in certifying forgeries! You are more likely to find a rare genuine stamp than to find a rare forgery. |
