Iceland is due to release a set of stamps honoring(?) the volcano that nearly disrupted LondonBus1's trip to, well . . . . London this year. The paper is infused with ash from the eruption.

Aargh...don't remind me. I'm in the airline industry, and that period was a disaster. Didn't see my family all that much since everything was grounded here in Europe and it was mayhem on the airports.
Had some good times too though...got a passenger back to Holland from Shanghai via Omsk, Almaty and Moscow. Normally a direct flight to Amsterdam, now zigzagging all over Russia...

But those are some nice stamps, no doubt about that.

Nice stamps ... as much as "volcanoes" can be defined as "nice".

I was going to say why are plain old paper stamps no longer appropriate? A way to deter counterfeiters, perhaps?

One consideration perhaps.
In the beginning, volcanoes were the source of the release
of vast ampounts of carbon dioxide into the air.
This gave rise to photosynthesis and plants releasing Oxygen.

Without volcanoes we would not be here.

I think philatelic agencies are looking for something different to stand out from the crowd. Or, in some cases, enterprising companies are approaching philatelic agencies with ever more outlandish possibilities.

If you haven't seen them for real, they have a bit of glitter because of the ash that is incorporated in them.

The FDC is pretty interesting too as it includes a barometer at the bottom showing the volcano's activity between March 20th and April 12th, when it finally started to cool down.

Iceland has many Volcanos, and if you look back at previous years, they ocasionally 'honor' their Volcanos.

No one said they weren't. However:

1- This makes the stamps novel. People, like myself, who would have otherwise passed them up will want them. I want them! It's a great marketing gimmick.

2- It's a way to make use of some of that ash by recycling it, so to speak.

Great stamps Greg.

It's so cool what they can do to make stamps interesting now a days.
