Hello folks,
This stamp was loose in an old album but found near a mounted #184.
Someone wrote 1879 on the back in pencil. I am asking if this is a #184? Also is it a fancy cancel? What type of cancel?
Am I correct in thinking the stamp is only worth 99 cents?

Here is a closeup photo of the bottom. From what I can see it does not have secret marks. However the printing lacks detail.

it does have the secret mark.
the cancel is a common cork cancel of the day.
the paper should be soft porous. not hard white.
IF the date is correct it is a 184.
next other it could be is a 207
now if the paper is hard white with secret mark it could be a 158.

go here and click on the 1870 link..

Looks like soft paper to me... the easiest way to tell soft paper is to grab the stamp with tongs, hold it up to a strong light and look at it.

If the paper has a sort of diamond-woven pattern to it, then it's soft paper.
