Is this stamp representative of a broken precancel device or is it just poor inking. It seems the break is primarily in the "A" of Davenport and extends to the upper bar, although the bottom bar looks normal:

A second one, this time a plate block and the damage seems to be in the lower right stamp:

With the first one being a bureau, I would think it is a inking error and not a broken device.

There are a large number of varieties in Bureau precancels - Horace Q. Trout's catalogue "Specialists' Guide to Bureau Print Precancels" runs to over 750 pages. There is no listing like yours that shows the break in the top line, however. Here's a sample listing from the catalogue.

For the Kingston, NY precancel, that one used a metal electrotype device, and the forces required to bend the plate into that shape would be tremendous. It's almost certainly an example of the sheet slipping during the precancel printing process.

The Davenport IA precancel is not a bureau print. It is PSS-713.
ps: this is my first post at this site, I've been collecting precancels a long time - feel free to send over questions.

welcome chasa
you will be popular if you are a precancel specialist.

From your profile I note you are 13 years old,
Just how long have you been collecting?

Rod, the showing of 13 years old is on a lot of people's profiles. Tony has that also. It is probably a bug in the program here on SCF. Some people have mentioned it when introducing themselves also. Not sure why it does that.

I figured why I was reset to 13 y/o. When you change your DOB here, first you enter month and day. It looks like the DOB is has been updated, but it retains the default year of 1997. It is not really an SCF bug, but rather an ease-of-use issue that could be improved.

and... thanks for the welcomes! CharlieAdrion PSS-6146 and current Vice-president of PSS.

Hey Charlie, aka Chasa,

Great to see you here! Sorry I haven't acquired any new precancels from you lately.
I expect to to reinstate my membership soon!
