I've spent the last several days trying to catalog a few hundred 2c Washingtons.

Of the 48 perf 11 unwatermarked offset issues that I identified as Type VII (Scott 528B), two of them each had a red dot in the left numeral.

If anyone can provide backgound on this variation I'd appreciate hearing from you.

I'm no expert, but I can't find it in my Scott Specialized.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me will have an answer.

Have you looked at all the offset varieties to see if one of them is listed with a dot in left 2? In other words, how positive are you of you identification as type VII?

It is certainly possible that I have incorrectly identified the type, but I don't think I did.

But if so, none of the five perf. 11 offset varieties is listed with a variation containing a dot in the left 2 in either the 2009 Scott Volume I or the 1983 Scott US Specialized that I have.

I have also been unable to find any mention of it in the online identifiers provided by 1847USA.com or AskPhil.org.

And I haven't been able to find any mention of such a variation in the listings for a "2CENTS2" Washington (design type A140) printed by any method.

Interesting I have found this in mine but I really never put that much work into really going further with it.

Take a look at this link and then the second stamp which has a rd dot in the number two.

Steve,
I can find no mention of the dot in left 2. The size and location is consistent on both examples with would indicate plate damage (pit or depression).
