I have been a member since 4/12/2008 and thought I'd introduce myself. My name is John Macco. I live in Shady Side, Md. which is about 20 miles south of Annapolis. I am a long time member of the Space Unit and am currently Vice President. The Space Unit is an international organization of collectors devoted to the collecting of anything space- covers, stamps, autographs, patches and/or pins. If anybody would like to see a sample copy of our journal, please email me with your mailing address. I will send a membership application with no obligation. I promote astrophilately by exhibiting my Apollo-Soyuz Test project (ASTP) collection at various stamp shows around the country. I am starting a thread on the World Cover Forum showing various Russian space stamp first day covers autographed by the various cosmonaut crews. I also plan to do a similiar thread on U.S.Cover Forum. Check it out!

Hi John,

Welcome to the community. If you've been browsing for the last few days I'm sure you've already seen how friendly and amazingly generous the people are here.

The Space Unit sounds interesting, and I'll definitely check out your new thread with the Russian space stamp FDCs. I happen to live in Huntsville, AL (aka Rocket City), so if there's anything I can pick up for you from the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, I'd be more than happy to. I drive by it almost every day to and from work. I picked up a bunch of commemerative covers celebrating the 25th anniversary of Space Camp (featuring the Star Wars stamps - which are admittedly science fiction), and they might well have some left.

Stamphop- Thanks for the kind words of welcome. If you can tell me what covers they have for sale, I may take you up on your offer.

John,

Well, I stopped by the Rocket Center gift shop, and the findings were somewhat less than I hoped for. At least stamp-wise. If you are interested in the commemorative coins or patches for each launch, they had an incredible collection of those.

For stamps, all they had to offer were:
  • Several first day covers of the "rare, out-of-print" 1974 10 cent Skylab stamp (SC#1529) for ... hold on to your seat ... $34.95.

This is the same FDC as can be found in this http://cgi.ebay.com/Skylab-1529-May...TX_W0QQitemZ230239845276QQihZ013QQcategoryZ687QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

Thanks John, for the sample copies of Astrophile! I am still reading through them and have learned a lot about our space program. It is too bad that our astronauts, scientists and engineers at NASA don't get more coverage in the news media. Excellent publication!
