Quadrille paper is basically graph paper,
with evidence of "cross hatching" squares or rectangles
in the watermark or as a design description.

which was a square dance.
Example of French "peace and commerce" quadrille
these are easy to find, and show up magnificently
when soaked in water

The reference to the type of background colour
on this Danish issue, referred to sometimes
as the Caravel Quadrille indicating the fine
cross hatching of the engraving
