The passing of the creator of Mr. Squiggle, All (once tiny tot) Australians will know him as the fellow with a pencil for a nose, who was from the Moon, and drew all his pictures upside-down, on a grumpy blackboard.
Thanks very much Rod for posting this one. This was part of our family talk last night. Our on-line supplier's infrastructure broke down so it was longer than normal. A great time as our older children come home for Christmas. We all shared our liking for Mr Squiggle as we had all seen him in our childhood. The conclusion was that Mr Squiggle must of been the first children's program on Australian TV. And a much loved, to be watched show indeed. He will be missed very much by many people.
Yes, John, bringing up a tacker during that period, I always remembered he had a strange soft voice, "Miss Pat" and "Rebecca" Another big one was the BBC's "Playschool" ...."There's a bear in there, ....."
These childrens shows not only entertain and educate but also become cultural icons. So many values are passed to our young by television. As a child in the U.S. I vividly remember Hoody Doody and the coonskin cap craze from Disney's Davey Crockett. I just hope that Mr. Squiggles is not replaced by Ozzy Osbourne.
Hey Russ, remember Princess Summerfallwinterspring? Remember the famous incident endemic to live tv when Buffalo Bob thought he was off the air and said something not too nice about the kids in the peanut gallery/
Thanks for the info Rod. I had seen that stamp in some kiloware but didn't recognise the character but assumed it was a childrens TV series as there was also a 'Bananas in pajamas' one which was shown in UK.
Welcome, Anthony :) Russ, I was an absolute HUGE fan of Davey Crockett I had his entire get up, (probably plastic and imitation fur) coonskin cap and Bowie Knife (plastic of course)
"Born in a mountain top in Tennesee....lalalala"
I was fascinated later in life when I read he died with other extraodinary men at the Alamo.
When Davy Crockett was a congressman in the House of Representatives he was also a strong opponent of President Jackson's policy of kicking out the indigenous people from the South West, eg the Cherokee - and as a result lost his House seat. I think that was why he went west to Texas.
