I put a lot of Brazilian stamps to auction after I compare their values in Scott 2007 and 2011. The value in 2007 is $29.90 and in 2011 is $47.55. It's an increase of 59% in 4 years. #2335-37 jump from $0.75 to $2.40 and 2373a from $2.25 to $3.75. Someone can explain such raise for Brazil stamps?

Yes Smauggie that must be one reason. I found out also that the Brazilian real has appreciate significantly compare to the US dollar since 2007. That should have increase the value of Brasilian stamps. |

Scott is extra slow in updating stamp values from several Central/South American countries. They did some major updates in the past 2 years, after leaving many of those countries stagnant for a long long time.
You think Brazil went up, check out Bolivia and Paraguay! Lots of doubling/tripling of catalog values, with even many minimum value stamps going up past the dollar mark! However, not everything went up. I know several of my Argentina stamps went down.

khj Tanks for the info. I start collecting Brazil last summer. Never collect a Latin country except in my topical collections. Awhile ago I ask my favorite stamp dealer why he doesn't sell South America stamp? He said i'm not going to make space in my displays for stamps with so little value. Maybe that's going to change. |

There are quite a few old-time collectors of South American stamps. But for much of the past 2 decades, relatively few collections came up for sale, and those that did often did not sell well. Many of the stamp stores often ended up moving the South American collections into the back room because they were just taking up prime real estate in the store. The fact that Scott was terrible at updating prices contributed to the lack of interest by dealers and deterred many collectors from getting into South American stamp collecting. I admit, the great majority of my Central/South American stamps are still sitting in glassines/boxes and unsorted, because at that time, the great majority of them were at the Scott minimum catalog value.
I agree, I hope Scott's recent updates will spice up the interest in South America. Now if Scott would only do a better job of comprehensively listing South American stamps and updating album pages. Anyone who uses Scott International albums knows the frustrations of large gaps for several South American countries. And there are numerous stamps and varieties that are not rare but are not listed in Scott. |

After China, India and Brazil are supposed to be booming economies with a growing middle class. Stamp collecting is seen as a middle class hobby; therefore it is assumed that the market for Indian and Brazilian stamps is either expanding or is about to. |

I'm on Facebook as well and have connected with a number of other stamp collectors, the majority of which are from Latin America, the Middle East, India and Indonesia. As jimjamtwo mentioned above, as the economies grow, the hobby expands and I think they also collect as it's a way to participate in their national heritage. |

Just came across this so thought I'd post it. Anyone know about the Brazil Stamp Agency in North America? A web search suggests its Interpost, Hewlett, NY, even though there's no indication of such on the attached card. Have those on SCF ever used them? |

They are a new issues agent for several countries. Some countries do their own advertising in the US. Others outsource it to agents in the US. These are NOT the same as new issues DEALERS. New issue dealers will make you pay a % above face and may require you to buy a minimum quantity. Agents sell the philatelic items at face value based on current exchange rates. |

I became interested in Guatemala in the late 90's..something about a large Quetzal with a revalue overprint intrigued me...with the help of a wonderful organization the ISGC (International society of Guatemala collectors)..i was able to put together a very good collection from low values to high and back of book for not much money... Now I am dealing with a much larger nation Argentina...and I am like a babe in the dark woods lighting matches to find my way...i try to find Argentina clubs but they end up as blind alleys..."did not pay their website fees" etc etc...I can not find a Argentina chapter in the A.P.S. chapters like I could the I.S.G.C...there have to be many Spanish speaking collectors in Argentina..i will keep looking for bi lingual or English speaking Argentina collectors until I get my balance on the subject !! |
