Word of the Day for December 17, 2010. (At least Merriam-Webster is helping to promote our hobby)!

"Those who imagine philately as boring probably have never examined a stamp, seen the intricacy of the design or researched the story behind the postal issue." -- From an article by Mark A. Kellner in The Washington Times, August 17, 2010

.....which is something that we do often here. A classroom in itself for me here. I'm going to look up the article quoted to read what else Kellner had to say about philately. (You know for me, I loved the hobby, but the word is just one of those words that take awhile to get to fit around ones tongue.)

It is amazing really how many people in the regular masses connot pronounce the word 'philatelic', and this goes for a few collectors too but mostly in the mainstream population.

Most common pronunciations I have heard are 'phill-atic' and 'phila-tic' <G>.

However, being a regular stamp collector that I am, philatelist, I am always pleased to help someone out with that word.

Easy to get confused...I'm pretty sure Fillamatellick is a suburb of Red Hook.

From Websters:
combining the Greek root "phil-," meaning "loving," with Greek "ateleia," meaning "tax-exemption,"

So does this mean we can claim a tax exemption for our hobby? In which case, how much? What about a campaign to get all stamp collecting expenses tax deductible?
