Great thread, Phil: I think someone else also posted this stamp with a question about an accent mark in the PANAMA overprint -- but I don't see that thread now. Nice stamps, but I'd rather hear more about the book Maybe you will show us some more maps. Where does the Canada XMAS 1898 enter the list? Kirk |

I think that the 1898 Canada map stamp comes in as the first Christmas Stamp (?)

As the Canada Map Stamp (the first Christmas Stamp) was mentioned, here is a scan of the Scott 86a - imperforated vertical pair (black, blue and carmine). |

i don't get it..the little book was published in 1936....i don't know where the writer got the idea that the overprinted 2 cent rose stamp was from 1887 ? I found this stamp with Columbia on it in the Panama section..the one in the book appears to be an overprinted version of a 1892 stamp issued in 1904 ! |

There is a fantastic story about the 1898 Canada Christmas stamp -- involves Victoria, Prince Albert, the postmaster general of Canada, and some political tensions? I think? The full story is in wonderfully recounted in Kenneth A. Wood's excellent 3-volume This Is Philately. I don't have them in front of me, but I'll be sure to type it out if I run across it.
Are links permitted/appropriate for books? The three volumes appear to have ISBNs of 0934466025, 0934466033, and 0934466041, and the three volumes together as 093446605X; searches on your favorite book sites, meta-search sites, or Google could help you find them. |

NO! The first map stamp (as shown above by Nigel) was issued in 1887 by Colombia for its Department of Panama (SG5). |

Phil & Others: I found a used copy of Klinefelter's book on Amazon for $15, was very tempted to purchase it, but decided to pass. In fact there are several books by Klinefelter -- all about maps on stamps. While Googling, I also found this PDF file at the National Postal Museum. Apparently, Klinefelter researched and produced a one-of-a-kind album for Allen Lee, who assembled a multi-volume thematic collection. N.B. This is a link to a PDF; clicking will open in your browser; to save a copy, right-click then Save File/Link As... http://postalmuseum.si.edu/findingg...ng_Guide.pdfThe first part of the PDF describes the Lee collection, followed by several pages summarizing the Klinefelter book and listing hundreds of early maps on stamps. Highly Recommended ! Thanks Phil for opening this topic, KirkS |

Well, I am the first to admit when I'm wrong. Several times on this site I've touted our Canadian 1898 as the first map stamp, but I am humbled by the Columbian/Panama. I refuse, however, to accept the Liberian. It's just a little globe. Hardly even worth mentioning. |
