Came across this 2007 publication that has a nice illustrated history of precancel stamps for beginners from the early days to the present (see pages 12-16), so thought I'd post the link:

I also liked the article on the Oklahoma centennial because it was released on my birthday.

Since the beautiful turquoise Palace of the Governors (Scott1031a) is mentioned as a precancel example in Wt1's link I thought this would be a good place to put mine.

Oh heck, two more:

I remember seeing lots of precancels when I sorted through my US stack. I put them aside for another day (week-month). I will have to read through this info before I start. Then, of course, I will have more questions.

cynical,
I wonder if there is a known example of Scott 1031 with a Santa Fe NM precancel? I would love to add that to my Route 66 collection. I know I already have a Santa Fe precancel, but not on that stamp. In fact, just yesterday I acquired a Santa Fe Railroad perfin.

Seeing the example of a Boston, Mass. precancel above, prompts me to make this comment. I have a stack of Boston, Mass. precancels on my desk now that I'm attempting to go through to identify type. That may be a mistake! I just found out that Boston has upwards of 53 different precancel types--more than New York City! At least I'm not going through Chicago precancels (yet)...they have a whopping 88 different types!

Stamperdude: I had the same thought when I put those Santa Fe ones on thinking it would be neat to have one.

Chasa: thanks for putting yours on. It was neat to see it.

Stampdog: I'm in the same boat as you. The ones I put on just happened to be near my keyboard. All this talk of precancels has made me think of all my used US stamps lumped into envelopes by Scott numbers that I will now have to look through, which means sub-dividing my collection once again.
