This looks like HAMMOND / IN (device 828), but upon close examination, there's an ILL overprint. HAMMOND / ILL is listed as device 729. Both devices look very similar with 2.5mm block caps.

Any comments on this one? I'm in the process of attributing my precancels, but not sure how to attribute this.

Both towns are at least 150 miles apart.

Frankie

frankie, very interesting strike. IMHO, defective strike of Hammond, IN. The part that would be the horizontal bar of the "L" looks too wide and has diagonal end on second one. Once again just my opinion.

Frankie, You are correct that it is a Hammond IN type 828. This is the problem with vinyls, they wear poorly, giving poor applications, smearing.

I also would go with IN. It just looks like some extra ink caused some blotchiness/bleeding or as Warrehouse said the device was getting worn out.

Great confirmation Chasa! The "L's" on your Hammond ILL are longer when compared to my example.
