stallzer: Where is Russ at ?

He was all over the first two pages of this thread -- with some awesome insight and information. Go back and read the beginning - it's good stuff.

Interesting point about PayPal fees -- I think I'd try to work out a 'certified check' arrangement for the exchange.

Did anyone really look at the bid history... why would someone keep upping their own bid? Not saying it isn't a nice or valid piece. I just find the bidding a tad Odd.

Linns just did a half page article on this auction in the latest issue.

Russ I had been meaning to ask, what reference book were your examples taking from?

They came from The United States One Cent Stamp of 1851-1861 by Mortimer Neinken. The must have for this issue is The United States One Cent Stamp of 1851-1861 by Stanley Ashbrook (2 Volumes). They are the best references.

Russ, what is the Vol II title? I found Vol I Then I came across another book titled "The Types and Plates of the U.S. One Cent 1851,1857" by Stanley Ashbrook. Is this Vol II?

1775mac, Stanley Ashbrook actually wrote 2 books. In 1922 he wrote "The Types and Plates of the U.S. One Cent 1851-1857" which was a single volume. In 1938 he wrote/published "The United States One Cent Stamp of 1851-1861" (2 volumes). Vol 1 is a study of the stamp and plating. Vol. 2 is a postal historyof the stamp. I have not read/reviewed the 1922 book but it is my understanding that it was the basis for vol. 1 of the 1938 book.
Neinken's book (1972) was largely based on the earlier work of Ashbrook. It should be noted that no comprehensive update has be published in 39 years while numerous discoveries have been made. The work of Jerome Wagshal and Raymond Vogel has yet to be included into a comprehensive book. Hopefully the research notes for from these two great American philatelists will find their way to a new and updated book for this stamp issue.

Thank you Russ great information. I see it clearly now and just got or should I say, waiting the arrival of the 1938 "The United States One Cent Stamp of 1851-1861".
I can not wait for the arrival for a nice read and to go back and check over my copies. Next up will be "The United States 10c Stamp of 1855-57".
