Scott 5 is only from position 7RE1 only 98 are documented. Siegel sold 2 last year $105,000 (cover) and $52,5000 (off cover). |

Horrors, I've never seen anything going for such a high sum on ebay! What would it be going for if we weren't in the middle of a recession. Bee-See, can you explain what you mean? Is this Scott# 5 or not? Did you mean that originally the seller misidentified it (i.e., listed it as something else)? |

jimjam, the seller originally identified it as Scott 9 (Type IV) with a value of $160.00 versus the Scott 5 (Type I) with a value of $70,000. |

Wow, he must be stoked!
It's a shame he can't change the title of his listing, because some people - obviously not all - must still think it's Scott# 9.
For those of us who know little/nothing about US stamps, how can you tell it's Type 1? |

JimJam, you cannot change the title after a bid is received, you can only add stuff to the description. |

The Type I is the only complete design (top and bottom) where as the Type Ia is complete at bottom and incomplete on top and Type Ib is complete on top and nearly complete on bottom. |

Yes, BeeSee, and it's times like this when it's actually unfair to the seller. The bids might be even higher if more people could tell by the title what was being sold.
Thanks for the info, Russ. People must really know their (US) stamps over there! Many people would figure the guy knew what he was talking about when he listed it as 'CV $160' and just take it at that.

jimjam, the 1851-57 1 cent is the most complex U.S. issue. It was issued imperf then perforated (1857) with 11 different type and numerous recuts, re-entries, transfer errors, etc. It is, in my opinion, the most challenging U.S. stamp. |

I'm just imagining what would have happened if the seller had listed it at a 'Buy It Now' price. ... Someone would have got it for $80 or whatever. |

I've been following the discussions about this on another forum for the past couple of days and I have to admit it's quite exciting. This couldn't have happened before the internet or without ebay. Stuff like this is a real shot in the arm for our hobby. |

I must admire the integrity of the seller and I hope he gets a fair price. Most people would have ended the auction early, my hat is off to him. On the other side someone is going to get a great rarity. |
