Question Regarding "L" Listing

Can someone show me an example or explain to me what it meant by "Like L-1 but spaced for Panama-Pacific (or Parcel Post, etc)" in the L listing. I'm using the above example for the St. Louis device, but I see this connotation throughout the catalog.

Frankie, The same design but elongated to fit & fill in the larger stamp used for a commemorative since most of the precancels were used on the standard definitive size.

Here they are - the concept to keep in mind is the different devices make different types. So - even though the letters are exactly the same, there were 3 different plates/devices used to print these.
