While this cover may not be that special in itself, it was mailed from Paris to an American pilot in World War I. Since I found it interesting that I could easily find out the history of the addressee, I thought I'd post it, along with a Wiki link to his biography:

Thanks for the info. on the 96th Squadron, but according to the above Wiki article, Codman was in the 94th Squadron (Red Devils), not the 96th (Hat in the Ring) where Eddie Rickenbacker was attached. (I think...as Wiki is occaisionally known to be wrong.)

Now I'm really confused, because I came upon this quote:

Quote:
94th Aero Squadron

The 94th Aero Squadron was the first American squadron to cross the French lines in WWI to fight over German territory. Its commanders included air combat theorist Raoul Lufbery and Captain "Eddie" Rickenbacker.

Holding Eddie Rickenbacker's autobiography in my hand and I stand corrected. He was part of the 94th which was the Hat in the Ring Squadron. Codman was part of the 96th squadron. There were so few over there they probably knew each other but were not in the same squadron. Sorry for the mistake and confusion.

Thanks for the correction. As you will note, I made a mistake, too (we all do it occasionally), so to summarize:

Codman = 96th Squadron = Red Devils
Rickenbacker = 94th Squadron = Hat in the Ring

I keep these posts with the cover shown to document the history behind the item, so I just wanted to make sure I had it correct.

Thanks again.
