Leads tell me that this is a German Local Offenbach stamp, and the stamp appears to have German? script, but I don't know and can't find it in my catalogues. All I can make out is the tree and the January 10th 1899 postmark. Can anyone catalog this or find a near value? Pretty close to a socked on the nose cancellation too. Thanks - Jeff

Searching on the web I found out those stamp (private brief) where used for private carriage of mail within the larger German cities from around 1870 to 1900. Got that on another forum. These are list in Michel cat. Sorry I don't have one.

Nice stamp! The top line says "Offenbacher" and it's from the town of Offenbach in Hesse, issued by the "Privat-Brief-Verkehr" firm in 1898.

Aren't those always the ones, just sitting in my "what the heck is it" book. I'm not sure what you collect Nigel, I could not find it in the "what our members collect", is it something that fits in your book?

There are all kinds of these German private or local posts, some of which have very nice-looking stamps. Unfortunately, there are also lots of reprints of some of them. Yours has nice visual appeal with that cancel.

Hi Jeff, Yes, I like to collect these but I only a have a small number so far of the hundreds that were issued. I like stamps from out of the way places especially from Europe and my main collecting interest is the island of Crete.

Thanks for the help Rod. I am making a stab in the dark but I assume the columns are for mint, used and on envelope?

Hi Rodney, Your edition is newer than mine. I had guessed this stamp was Mi #4 which has the same design but described as grey-blue. Are your prices in euros or still in deutschmarks?

Yes, Jeff, the symbols are for (1) mounted mint (mint hinged), (2) used, and (3) used on cover, postcard etc.
