This CCCP fish stamp has been bugging me every now and then for the last year... -I would like to ID these fish down to species (my best guess so far is Spicara spp... ). The text in the bottom right corner is probably a lead but I can't find any info using Google....

-any input is appreciated :)

Cheers,
// Magnus;

SG5438 1983 "Zerro"

Sorry cannot elaborate,
I am a supermarket fisherman,
mine come in boxes, usually
with "fingers" on them somewhere.

Common name: Picarel (Zerro)

Scientific name: Spicara smaris

Origin and characteristics: a member of the Centracanthidae family, the picarel is a relatively common fish in the waters of the eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black Sea. Picarel are 15-20 cm in length, almost cylindrical, with an elongated, flattened body and fine pointed snout. Their scales are reddish-brown on the back and silver on the belly. The protrusible mouth has small, not very sharp teeth on both jaws; the eyes are round and very large. It has just one dorsal fin, the anterior part with spiny rays and soft rays behind; the tailfin is moderately forked. It is a gregarious fish, with large shoals inhabiting the Posidonia beds at depths from 15 to 100 meters, and mainly feeds on benthic organisms. Although not a popular target species, it is caught with skimming nets and lines.

For the longest time alot of us canadians refered to walleye (also at supermarket without fingers) as piceral. On top of that in russia they have a species that looks and aparently taste as good as walleye called a Zander that grows 2-3x as big as our walleye.

Detail:
"Benthic Organisms" ?
Benthic organisms, such as sea stars, oysters, clams, sea cucumbers, brittle stars and sea anemones, play an important role as a food source for fish and humans.
Benthic=benthos grk from "depths of the sea"

The Fishbase website agrees that "smarida" is Russian for Spicara smaris or picarel.

For what it is worth, the cyrillic (sp) in the lower right corner transliterates as smarida.
