All the other portuguese stamps I have in this series, have the $ before the numeral but these two have it after the numeral. As I do not know anything about Portuguese Currency is this correct? Regards, Horamakhet
"The escudo, sign: $ was the currency of Portugal prior to the introduction of the Euro on 1 January 1999 and its removal from circulation on 28 February 2002. The escudo was subdivided into 100 centavos.
Amounts in escudos were written as escudos$centavos with the cifrão ($) as the decimal separator (e.g. 25$00 means 25 escudos, 100$50 means 100 escudos and 50 centavos)."
Your 2 stamps are denominated 1 escudo. The other stamps you refer to are denominated in centavos (e.g. $05).
Thank you for that. Bit by bit I am slowly sorting the family accumulation. I am sorting them all into countries and then apart from the ones I want to keep, I will sell them at auction as an accumulation of collections. I am going to specialize in New Zealand, Australia and USA, I know it sounds a lot to specialize in three countries, but it will keep me occupied on cold winter nights. Regards, Horamakhet
