One of my least favorite things about the Scott catalogue is the numbers distinguished by color alone. The stamp on the left is a 76, but I think I have a case that it is a 76a, black-brown. The stamp on the right is a 95 (it has the grill) and is clearly browner than its companion.

So what about you all? Do have good examples demonstrating the color differences between numbers? A 75? A brown 76? 70 vs 78?

The black brown is very dark (from Siegel Auctions)

Wow, that's like, black, not brown. Shoot.

Now I want one. And while I've seen a few 76a up on ebay, none have looked like that. Do you mean to say people mis-identify stuff on ebay?

Otto:

The 76 on the left is beautiful -- if you're unconsolable that it's not a 76a, then I'll give you a dollar for it

Seriously, thanks for sharing the scans -- it really is a attractive, nicely-centered, and lightly-canceled.

Thanks, KirkS. Don't get me wrong, I love love love love loooove that 76. I want it to be my avatar when I figure that part of SCF out.

I'm developing a thing for collecting all the variations on a design. Obviously I'm having a field day with the banknotes

Like Russ said, it's a regular Brown. Pretty nice centering for a 76 and attractive looking example.

From the "Forum Home" page, go to the "Stamp Community Support" forum and create a new thread with a subject of "Avatar request"

When you click the link add a photo, go to your already-uploaded photos and add your 76.

The forum admins will take care of the rest within a few days.
