Hi to all

As a beginning to me specialising in the USA I bought these at an auction for $60.00 Australian. There have numbers under them, but I do not know if they are Scott or Gibbons numbers. Did I get ripped off or did I get a bargain
Regards
Horamakhet

They look like Scott numbers, but very hard to tell due to the size. Hard to tell the condition, perhaps break them up into 5 or 6 scans and it would be easier to see the details.

$60 australian, which is about $60 US works out to 1.50 a stamp. If the 10 is really a ten, it could fetch 60 on schmeebay in decent condition. I'd say a bargain, and a pretty good start on a US collection.

Nice start on classic U.S. The first stamp listed as Scott 10 is 11. This is one of the most mis-identified U.S. stamp. Over 90% of stamps on ebay listed as 10 are really 11. Things to look for is the 114 check for split grill which carry a nice premium. 134 was printed with bot the H and I grill with the I grill being much rarer. Scott does not price them according to grill but the I grill is normally +25-50%. No real ratities here but several nice stamps with several $25-200 cat value. I would say well worth the price. I look forward to seeing larger scans and will give more feedback.

Hi to all
Thank you for all your helpful comments

I asked the seller if he had any more old USA Stamps, he said no. He said they were from a deceased estate and apart from some really modern USA there were no old stamps other than what he sold me. Some Times you can get lucky. Is the Scott Catalogue expensive or does in come in sections like the Gibbons. I also saw a USA Post Office Catalogue for about $40.00 but it seemed really general. The other problem is that they all old stamp hinges, so I would assume that the best idea is to cut them as close to the stamp with damaging the stamp and then remount them or should I leave them on the sheets as they are?

You got some nice stuff there.
You didn't win the lottery, but you didn't get taken either IMO.

Another opinion I have is some of those should never have been
taken off cover. I bet that 65 was on a great cover judging from
the cancel. Most of them are worth more on cover when used.

(Not knocking your purchase, just thinking aloud.)

Fwiw: I would remove them from the hinges by trimming them as close as possible,
the mount them in some Showgaurds... That is my opinion, I am far from expert though.

If all you are looking for is a US catalog, then hit ebay or Amazon for Scott's Specialized. It's all you need for US Stamps, Covers, and B.O.B items. I picked up 2009 for $18.00 on ebay, and since I'm not a dealer I don't need up to the minute pricing and there really hasn't been much price of a change from 2009 -2011.

Hi to all

Thank you for all the helpful information. And Ratio411 I agree with you if you have nice cancellations leave on the paper or envelope. I have some in the family accumulation where there are six or seven Victorian Era stamps (Mostly English) and they look great with the complete cancellations. I told myself that when sorting out the accumulation that I would not go back to stamp collecting, but the "Obsession" got to me, I am going to try and specialize in USA, Australia, and New Zealand, but sometimes it is so hard parting with some items, but, if I want to buy others, then I need to dispose of others.
Regards,
Horamakhet

Great buy Horamkhet

I want to start getting some of the more expensive stamps but I'm a bit of a chicken so I have decided to wait for our next stamp show and have my more experienced philatelic friends help me.
