I am wondering if this is rare or not. Three of the stamps have Graf Zeppelelin typed on the face of the stamp. I have only been able to find the stamp without the type. I do not have a book to look it up. Any help would help. Thanks

Hi,
They look like private issues to me but I'm no expert.
No doubt collectible though as all things Zeppelin tend to be.

Perhaps a high resolution scan would help. Those are rough on the eyes.

On the Picasa site there is a magnifier next to the rotate image that you can make the scan bigger. That may help.

Thanks for the history. Is there a book that you can identify these and would also give values? I am new to this since I inherited a collection.
Thanks, Joe

Joe, is there any type of stamp on the back of the cover? I have it narrowed down to three types of covers. They range from $25-$50, this is 1974 pricing but most prices of the updated 1980 American airmail catalogue have doubled.

I know who would (not quite) kill for that "Por Zeppelin" etiquette.

(versus say a plain old "Por Avion")

umm, yeah, it's where the zeppelins would dock.

It's also the crash site of the Hindenburg

Ahh, this is what I needed. Here ya go, just mind that as a rule price normally doubles from the 1974 airmail catalogue.

1930, May 26- June-6 Europe-Pan American Round Flight, Rio De Janeiro Dispatches.

The "Graff" returned to Pernambuco on May 24, carriny only mails destine for that point. It left for Lakehurst on May 28. Mail posted at Rio de Jeneiro for onward transmission beyond Pernambuco by this service was flown by special Condor plane to Pernambuco where it was received the Recife cachet (the large one dated 28 MA 30). The mail bears a special green Condor label. Brazil permitted the agency in charge of the Zeppelin flight to issue a number of special stamps showing the Zeppelin in flight and inscribed "Brasil-Europa". Some were overprinted "Graff Zeppelin" and "USA" for use as far as Lakehurst. There were several overprints changing the basic values of the stamps. Covers required regular Brazilian issues in addition, equivalent to the regular surface rate. These special stamps are regarded as having a quasi-official standing.

Catalogue# Z-109(a) Rio de Jeneiro to Lakehurst $35.00
*Note Letters and cards are assumed to be franked with the special semi-official stamps of appropriate denomination required for each dispatch. Covers bearing stamps whose basic value has been altered by overprinting are worth somewhat more.
