I see people posting about buying lots on ebay,,thats generally how it starts out,,,hopefully they are spending less than when I started.. its not going to happen now...but years ago I would drive down to Dutch Country Auctions in Wilmington Delaware and come home with like 3 huge box lots for $440.00..i learned a few years ago the dealers will not let us small guys win at the live auction..if I bid 200 they would bid 450..and I am wondering what did they see in that box...they buy in bulk..take the loads back to Philadelphia and Baltimore ..pull out what they want and take the box lots right back to Dutch Country for the next auction in 6 or 7 weeks...anyway..i guess bulk is a learning process..can you unload the 40 or 50 of a kind stamps in the glassines...when you get to my point of collecting you want to see the page completed..so you have to start buying the single fairly expensive stamp ..its all good !!

Phil, I can see that. When I left collecting in 1972, I was down to collecting British America and British Oceania in two Minkus albums. When I got back in a few years ago, I decided to go with the Internationals to Part 8, or about the time I left. So right now there is a lot of fun to be had with box lots. Many nice finds, too.

Phil, getting them at a decent price is the thing. There is a lot of competition for them on ebay right now. Two or three years ago, I was making some better buys. Sounds like in some places like California you can buy the stuff up at shows almost any weekend and turn it around on ebay pretty quickly, removing what you want, of course. Not many shows out my way.

Modern_who we have a guy in our club who gets a check from the treasurer..buys a box lot, breaks it down into auction lots for our club auction..the amount of work he does is awesome...he starts the bidding at 20 percent of catalog if the item does not sell in a reasonable time he red tags it to 10 percent of catalog..eventually it sells...he says he does it to let our members buy at a reasonable price...but has also improved the clubs treasury from 80 or 90 dollars to 800 or 900 dollars..when you get a worker in a club, they are usually a worker...many of the others just come to be entertained..thats why I have had the circuit book job for 15 years or so...i was also recorder about that long..another job no one wants to touch !!
