I am looking at an APS circuit book...Denmark # 176 used catalog 8 dollars and the honest man is asking 25 cents for it...he has an arrow pointing at the bottom of the stamp and sure enough if you look close there is a perf missing...most of us collect for own pleasure and would be insulted by a dealers offer if we tried to get anything for our stamps..its a fine looking stamp missing a perf and it would fill a pot on your page...what do you do ????

Bob, you're not giving your usual, sensible answer!
Pull off another perf to make it worth a quarter!
Or at least pay him the 50-cents it's worth! |

One missing perf!!
If the stamp looks good otherwise I say go for it. Isn't a little bit of wear and tear part of a used stamp's charm.
Call me nostalgic if you wish but really guys one missing perf!!

It's obvious he knows the perf is missing, and I believe he is a quality collector who thinks the stamp is worth $.25 to him. Buy it, pay the $.25 and fill a hole until something better comes along. For the most part, people who offer circuit books are not armatures. He knows what he's doing.

i like Dianes reply..when I look at my used stamps..i try for all perfs, clean cancels,etc..but how would a dealer rate them ? I have a lucky friend who lives in a large population area, is retired and catalogs stamps for a dealer...the dealer lets him keep any stamps that catalog under 3 dollars for his labors...so I guess thats what the dealers want.. stamps cataloging over 3 dollars and up..the fellow I know makes up approval books with the under 3 dollar stamps and mails them to clients..he works on stamps like 12 hours a day, every day...i like stamps ...but not that much !! |

Well folks I look at like this, and have been telling Walter this very same thing. If it is something you need to go into your collection and you can afford it GRAB IT, because you never know that maybe the only time you ever get to see a specimen of that stamp. And then again on the other hand you might get lucky enough to find a better one later on and then you can either keep the original that's slightly messed up or pass it on to a newbie so they can enjoy it. There are many ways to look at the situation but, as for myself I would buy it and if something came along later Great if not atleast I have one in my collection. |

Gussy, Yippi I aaaayyyyeee !! I agree with Swabbie..it is the mans job....he has nothing else to do...when I was "working for a living" I day dreamed about being a part time stamp dealer when I retired....i had NO CLUE as to how difficult it is to constantly come up with new stock...customers do not want to see the same old stuff when they come to your table...then you have to catalog and catorgarize the new stock...then you have to have the stamina of a bull to load and unload vans and set up and take down...and then you have to hope you make a few sales.....sound like fun anyone ????? |
