Specimen With Return Address Question

Not that kind of specimen! This is a stamp that I found in a lot of cover that someone gave me. If is marked specimen and has Die II in pencil. What baffles me is if this is a specimen, why would it have a return address of South Sea Transportation Line on it. And since envelope stamps are not my specialty, does anyone know precisely what this is? Any help is appreciated - thanks - Jeff

BEP would print these types of corner cards for businesses. This was probably a sample sent to the company for preproduction approval.

Was the company approving the size of envelope, or the stamp design or both?

It was probably for final approval of the envelope which bay have been corner card printing only or envelope size if it was a special cut.
