New To Stamps

Hi, Just joined this site. It seems that in my new life as the owner of a Antique Collectable Flea Market I will run into a lot of stamps. The one thing I have already learned since I started reading the forum is that there is a lot to learn! LOL Any suggestions on how to sell stamp collections? I recently aquired a lot of stamps that have been in storage for 10 years. From the notes with some of them the elderly gentlemen that owned them at one time was going to open a store. I have a lot of stamps that appear to be valuable but it would take me a lifetime to sort thru them with my limited knowledge. Any suggestions!

Your are in for a whopping good time with friends that will help and friends that will be as excited as you are about a wonderful find. Most important you will find friends that are going to be honest with you. If you have a winner, they will let you know. If you have something that is common, they will let you know that too. But a winner or a common, the fun is in the collecting for all of us. You asked what to do. You will get a million answers. Decide if you are going to collect or just sell that will make a difference as to what you save or put in the sell pile. I would start by separating by country. Then start asking questions, show some scans, see if there is a stamp club near you that can help. Most importantly take everything in half steps to start with. All of us here will help as best we can and try to help you along the path (although all of us drift off the path somewhat sometimes). Have fun and then have some more fun. Again, welcome - Jeff

To add to what Jeff mentioned, maybe try posting a few pics of the ones you think are valuable. I don't think there is a quick fix for you dilema, if you have a library in your town maybee you can check to see if they have a set Scott's Calalogues.

If the donator of your stamps was going to open a store, did he have a lot of stuff marked or did he have it sorted into really good / good / average type of stuff?

There are many different types of collector and levels of collecting.

Time, money, passion, other commitments, life stuff all affects things.

I've never thought of stamps as antiques although technically they are. They are just stamps, well designed, well engraved, well printed, well cancelled, etc etc and then the not so well ones. But all are part of the stamp world.
