I just got these three stamps that are supposed to be different shades of #11. After looking at my Scott catalogue, I believe that the first two are type 1 while the last is type 2. Upon examining the back of the third stamp which is a dark brown color, I see that someone wrote #10 in pencil. My Scott catalogue distinguishes #10 from #11 only by color (orange brown - #10 vs dull red - #11). Can anyone tell me if there is any other feature that I can look at to discern whether a stamp is #10 or #11?

The last one looks brown to me. It also has the frame lines recut. Checkout this link that shows the differences. The last stamp may be sulferetted. http://home.comcast.net/~3cent1851/ob.htm

First, sorry no #10. There are two big problems with color aon scans;
1. scanner and monitor error
2. ink oxidation

The color chart below may help

Valleystamper and Russ, thanks for your help. I purchased these stamps as #11 so I am happy with what I got. I was just curious about the #10 pencil notation on the back of the darker brown stamp and mystified that Scott didn't provide much help in distinguishing between #10 and #11.
Russ, with regard to the color charts, do you have a link to the color study chart so I can view it better?
Thanks

These are some nice stamps, mhc99, I would be happy to have any of them.

That was my question for a long time. I really want there to be an actual feature, ala a secret mark on a banknote, that would show the difference. Well, I finally got a 10A the other day (with a cert, to be sure), and when you see it in person, the color difference is unmistakable.

Sorry for reposting this image from another thread (can you tell I'm proud of my new 10A?), but I think shows the color difference rather well against a brownish 11A:

What book do those pages come from, Russ?

Russ, it is a pity that the color study charts are relatively small to view. They look like a great guide and would love to be able to use a clearer example.
