I recently inherited a small stamp collection from the 1950's. It was my grandfather's and has been sitting in a closet for decades. The stamps are in a "stamp collection' book published in 1953. I though I had better get som einformation on this stuff before it gets lost again for 40 years...

Hey thanks. I am not quite sure how to begin investigating these stamps I found at my grandfather's home. I will likely inventory them by date and description and then post pics. I likely will not keep them.

to the site.

What countries are covered by the collection?

If I were you, I would check with your local library to see if they have copies of the Scott's catalogs. You can look up the catalog value of each stamp. Keep in mind that depending on condition, etc. the stamps may actually sell for only 20% to 30% of the catalog value - if you can find someone who wants them. It will depend on their scarcity.

When you get ready to sell ebay, StampWants or StampOffers might be the way to go. ( ebay will be the most expensive to use by far)

You are welcome to post some pics and we will be glad to help out as we can.

Grambo:

When you get a chance, let us know the name of the stamp album, so that we can get an idea, as to what your grandfather collected.

I am not looking for millions for them. That would be greedy and silly. I'd rather sell them for a fair price to someone who will appreciate them. If I keep them, they will never see the light of day.

As far as countries: USA, Canada, Belgium, Germany, and a few others...

I will compile an inventory and get it posted up as soon as I can. I am buried in his estate affairs right now...

Welcome Grambo,

Although you may not be interested in a prize that is MORE STAMPS, check out the membership contest when you get a chance. You have earned a point for your first post and also an additional 1 point for the next 2 posts, so you have 3 points total . See the rules for how to gather more points. Bob gets another point for being the first to welcome you to the forum! You have my sympathy for your loss, and I am aware of the red tape as I have been executor of relatives and it takes a lot of time and effort.

Don't let peeps fool ya we have a blast on here but when it comes to helping out with stamp info it's all business, except for the occasional cut-up that goes along with it. Grambo!

Let us know how we can help--glad to have you here!

Gussyboy1

Are you able to scan the pages of the album that was your grandfather's? Then you could post it by pages---but first tell us what the title of the album they are in --itwould be of great help.

Welcome to the stamp community, grambo!

Sorry to hear about your grandfather passing away.

As you can see we'd be happy to help you identify what you have. Stamp collections can have both monetary value and sentimental value. Sometimes the monetary value may be low but the sentimental value is high. So you might want consider if any descendants (or future descendants) of your grandfather might be interested in owning some of his stamps. I never got a chance to see any part of my grandfather's collection. It would have meant a lot to me to have some stamps from his collection, regardless of the book value.

Hello and welcome to the club Grambo........

Always sad to hear of a collector passing.

I wouldn't make any decisions until you know what you have......and as T mentioned other decendants might be interested.
