Stock transfer stamps are revenue (tax) stamps that were used on receipts to show that the state and federal tax had been paid on a stock trade. There are some pictures of stock transfer stamps in this thread.
my friend and I actually purchased some for our collections when we worked in the stock unit of Iriving Trust..records were kept in file drawers then..we used to do the grunt work for people like Steve Allen, Sergeant Shriver..everyone around Madison ave and 46th st. I mean we purchased some of the stamps not stocks at 67 dollars a week..i will have to see if I can find them !
This is a Massachusetts stock transfer stamp. I have a set of six denominations from 2c to $2. All the designs are similiar and incorporate the Great Seal of Massachusetts.
The Latin inscription on the Great Seal is "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem," meaning "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty".
I also like revenues. I have some from bank shares that were sold for a local bank when it opened in the 50's. It had since merged with another bank about 20 years ago in the mid 80's. The shares are now obsolete and the banks purchase receipts books had the appropiate tax revenue stamp on it.
