This stamp is NOT tied to cover. it is a #1, put on a stamp-less cover with a faked tie in. Knowing that, the opening bid is under $200.00. My question is, do you think it's a decent price to get a #1 and a stamp less cover.. If I bought it I would remove the stamp.

What does #1 normally sell for?
And wouldn't you damage the cover if you removed the stamp? |

Daryl looks like you have two margins on the 5c and a very nice stampless. The tie on the 5c shows a little on the cover. If you know that is faked, then I certainly would take the stamp off the cover. I think you would be buying for the #1 and the cover as a plus, but stay reasonable with that fake strike on it. Certainly test the waters. Good luck - Jeff |

a #1 normally sells anywhere between 300-600 depending on the condition of the stamp. I could remove the stamp without damaging the cover, and I would be buying it for the stamp itself. The going rate right now is 180.00 |

If the stamp is real, to sell it no need to tied to a stampless cover to attract buyer's attention. |

How do you know the stamp does not belong there? It is tied a little bit maybe??? I would not be quick to condemn the cover. Do you remember my Joshua Chamberlain cover and how postage was paid twice? |

Zhang.. The PSE cert states: US#1 5c 1847 Pale Brown
"The stamp is not genuine usage - the stamp with a circular red grid cancel, has been added to a genuine stampless cover from New York to Baltimore, MD and a fake tie has been added to the right of the stamp" |

I would go ahead and go for it, but keep your head, you know there is another one out there if the bidding gets crazy. If you were fortunate enough to get it, I would take a breath and a long study at the cover before I took it off the envelope. Happy Hunting. |

Since someone has gone to the effort to fake the tie in of the stamp to the cover, it might be that the stamp is somewhat damaged and applied to the envelope so you can't determine if it has thins. As others have said, don't get caught in a high bidding war.

$200 is at the upper middle to high end of retail on a sound, 2 margin #1. I have a 3.5 margin copy with blue, grid cancel that I paid $160. Even with the stampless cover, this isn't worth more than $200 for.

I agree with mhc99, could be damage on the back of the stamp. The other question is the stampless cover of any value. A quick Google check finds plenty on Col. Elisha Covell. |

The Stampless cover has a very common CDS and is worth a few bucks at best, so it really amounts to how much a 2 Margin example is worth. |

one thing I thought of on the way home is that, because it was stuck to the cover, I have no idea what kind of glue was used. That alone dissuades me from bidding on it.

One of the things which has always fascinated me is the printers initials at the bottom of this and the 10 cent stamp. THe bottom margin is cut so as to remove the initials. I would always regret the missing initials. |
