i just wanted to check that im right and this is a 518b its the middle stamp taken with a 518 and a 395 dark brown as a colour comparison

I believe the first stamp to be violet black and the second to be violet brown instead of the deep brown. The deep brown has no violet tint to it.

The one I think is the 518b is the middle one I know the one to the right is a violet black

The one from siegel is just how it looks in the flesh mine is just a tiny little bit darker but the pic doesn't do it justice on the colour

That is the big problem with color determination from scans. The middle stamp in your scan and the bottom stamp in filipo's scan both show a definite violet tint ON MY MONITOR, color error from scanners and monitors is a real part of internet philately. The 518b has no violet or reddish tint.

I know colour is an issue because of colour variation and acceptance from scanners, cameras and monitors it took me a few attempts to get it that good because my scanner has died, so I tried to use my digital microscope but that showed all three stamps as black and White, fantastic detail but completely the wrong colour that was why I put the other stamps in the picture as a reference whilst using a pony scanner app on an iPhone because it was the best I could get the colours to be close to the real thing and show the difference in colour
