I came accross this in my Father-in-Law's collection. It has to be the smallest letter ever sent through the mail. The envelope measures 3 1/4" x 1 7/8". As you can see by the size of the stamp it's VERY SMALL. I though you might like to see a unique cover.

Although not quite as small as your example, here are a couple of small covers from the late 19th century, as they were very commonly used at that time:

Do these fit into the class of covers called "Lady's covers"?

The current minimum size in the United States is 3.5 inches x 5 inches.

A few months ago, I mailed some "homemade" postcards that were really 4x6 index cards that I ran through a laser printer. The postmaster commented that 4x6 index cards work fine, but 3x5 is too small.

I have a small mourning cover that is nearly that size. When I get back home I'll get it out and scan it. I need to revisit that part of my collection, its been awhile since I've looked at my covers.

In this day of fully automated processing, they simply can't have things that are too small or too large, the machines can't handle them and allowing off-size materials just slow the process down as someone has to manually cancel, sort, etc. I'm not at all surprised they're not equipped to handle something as small as 3x5.

Hi, this little one may get the prize. I received it on the 13th of January 2014, mailed from Southampton Center, England. Please note that the ruler is in centimeters! (because I don't have one in inches)

That much smaller than my smallest Ladies cover which measures 2 3/4" x 1 3/4" Just big enough for the address, most of the CDS and the Scott US #158.
