1871 Thomas Jefferson

I've been going through a stamp book that my wife put together when she was a young girl. That was 50 years ago.I have found some issues that look pretty interesting. Could someone please help me with the Scott # for an 1871 brown Jefferson ? I'm also seeking the Scott # for a 1904 Louisiana Purchase Robert Livingston in green. I thought that I would begin my search with these 2. Thank you for any help that you can spare me. I've been lurking here for quite a while and I'm so impressed with the neighborly attitude that this forum holds. It really seems like a lot of nice people spend their spare time here. Thanks a lot.

welcome junior e your louisiana purchase scott number is 323 and the jefferson could be 139,150, 161, 172, 187, 188, 197, 209, 209b Scans would be needed to help confirm, but most importantly - WELCOME!,

The green Livingston would be #323 1982 catalog value used $4.50
The brown Jefferson would be #139 or #150. 139 has a grill and is rare. 150 CV was $9.50
I am looking in the general Scott catalog, not the specialized. There may be details I'm not aware of.

you might be able to see an imprint with points on the back. That is why it would help to see a scan of the front and back.

A grill is a checker board or waffle like pattern that pressed into the stamp.

junior e, if you can post a good scan of the front and back of the Jefferson the members here can probably ID it for you.

Russ gave you a great scan of what a grill should look like. Many times other stamps may show only the faintest look of that as they get flattened out over age (or intentionally), but you should be able to see some part of that imprint on your stamp. - jeff
