Help With Franklin ID

Sinclair, are #7's worth plating ?

Stallzer, some are worth plating just because of the plate they were printed from. The top row of plate 4 is a good example, they command a substantial premium over a plain jane #7. Plate 3 is a scarce plate and should also command a premium. Then of course you have the various varieties that plating can confirm. From a resale perspective I think plating will pay for itself in higher prices. The $10 that Richard Doporto gets for his certs are worth every penny IMO but I must admit I havn't sent anything to him.

Because the ornaments were so Complete I did wonder if it was a 5a or a 6 but I thought I'd get it checked before I bid because this set are so hard to Id and you see so many miss identified ones but I didn't want to say where it was in case it was but I don't need need another 7 as much as it is a nice one good luck otto

Thanks Sinclair. I have a cover with 4 #7's (Strip of 3 and 1 single) and was just wondering if it would be worth it.

I remember when you posted that cover on the VSC a while back. The image was not the best. You should post it and we can have a look. Strips can be easy to plate and the fourth stamp is apt to come from a nearby position.

Glad you are out of the running, razer , I'd hate to be bidding against a fellow SCFer. I've been in the hunt for a nice ordinary 7 for a while. The last one I bought had these funny perfs and that just wasn't right. I know what you mean about the mis-ids, I used to complain and now I seek them out.

I know what you mean a good one to look for is 9's 20% of them are not ebay is my friend. I have a good memory and once I know what to look for on many stamps and I always look for it. But collections are where the real bargains are and international lots but they don't come up often there was one on ebay the weekend from France it was a dream buy but I lost out on it and it didn't even reach 10% of cv but I just didn't have enough cash to seal the deal which is a shame because the 90c if the cancel is real that is twice the price paid on it's own and a NYC grid to uk and the stamp is on a old page in france never mind the 1c and 5c type1 and 2 and the ebay no is 19052523047

Well shoot, it went for $81.57, and not to me. I look for "1 c franklin" or "blue franklin" to find the small scale sellers who don't post a catalog number. Looking for 7s (or other rarer numbers) in stamps described as 9s is a good tip. I've had good luck finding US stamps internationally, the stamp at left is from Sweden, but it only make sense if you're buying a bunch to spread out the shipping costs, and I really don't have the funds to be buying a bunch. Ah well, back to the hunt.

But if it's a good lot then you can sell what's not needed and some times you can make money I have a unused 9 that owes me $14 a 7 that owes me nothing a unused 89 that owes me $9 not a perfect stamp though and from the same lot a used 518b that lot above was expensive and the most expensive I've ever considered going for but it went for a fraction of cv and could have been easily broken to get some money back album pages are a good one but one of the best things to find what goes on is the iPhone ebay app you can save search's and it shows you recently listed so anything in that search criteria is shown to you and when there is pics in the description you can zoomin and see each stamp more than double size and most of the time you can I'd them before you bid even in collections and it tells you when there is 15 mins to go what more can you ask for
