Grandma Moses' name appears on a stamp (though not her mug). She lived to be 101. George Burns (who was pictured on a stamp) lived to be over 100 years old. |

The criteria can be tuned to anything we want, I suppose. Oldest pictured on stamp, youngest pictured on stamp, oldest to live that appeared on a stamp, youngest to live that appeared on a stamp ... and the list goes on.
That's the beauty of stamp collecting. Uh oh, did I mention "beauty" ... now I wonder who is the most beautiful/handsome person (male and female) pictured on a stamp? ... Or who's the "ugliest"? In those cases, it's all a matter of personal opinion and this thread could go on forever!

The Slania Grace Kelly stamp is one of the most beautiful images of a person on a US stamp. |

How about Virginia Dare on Scott 796 who was the first to be born in the Americas to English parents in 1587. She's on a stamp as a baby. Of course the whole colony disappeared along with Virginia Dare. |

Good catch Will. Though I dare say the depiction was created in absentia. I find it difficult to pick out her face on the stamp. |

Quote: How about Virginia Dare on Scott 796 who was the first to be born in the Americas to English parents in 1587. A distinct possibility, but with no date of death ever confirmed, it's hard to pinpoint exactly. Sure is an interesting story though, that I don't recall having read much about before. For anyone interested in the theories surrounding it, here's a Wiki link containing interesting information, including an image of the stamp (Scott 796): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_DareBy the way, thanks to all who participated in this thread. I just started it purely on a whim and it prompted quite an interesting number of responses. |
