Another Miss ID On Ebay

Hey all!
I just found this on ebay your thoughts please. I do not know if this is intentional or someones pipe dream please the study color closely. I feel it is a 64 rose pink or a 65 bright rose pink. but definitely not a 64 pigeon blood.

It looks carmine lake to me but I have spent the last 2 weeks looking at 2cent washingtons and getting noware lol

Anything containing the following//// a red shade or derivative there of, 2c, and Washingtonlook out guaranteed headache. While on the subject of color. What color guide do you use. I have some Scott specialized color guides but they are limited and expensive. Any suggestions?

If you do a ebay search for Scott 64 probably 90% are mis-identified. The best color guide is The Encyclopedia of the Colors of United States Postage Stamps by Roy H. White. It is 4 volumes and expensive.

Anyone shot a pigeon lately? This term as it refers to color on a stamp is dangerous at best. I've stated before I am also a collector of gemstones and the coveted Ruby has used the term pigeon blood for likely at least a 100 if not 1000 years longer than stamps. 99.5% of all ruby mined on the planet does not fall into this color distinction nor quality attached to such. Sounds very simular to the ratio attached to scott 64. As it would refer in a top gem quality ruby - "truly deepest of pinks without breaching into true red." An ebay search of pigeon blood will likely return 1000's of rubies most that have been also misidentified due to modern heat treatments . The term was coined far before this heat treatment was availiable and natural occuring unheated earth mined pigeon blood rubies are in the 0.001 category. This is scientifically based on chemical composition which may also be the discerning factor of the proper scott 64's ink composition. The addition or lack there of a specific pigment or chemical used to obtain the color specified in the ink. Without breaking down the ink on a specific stamp the generally accepted rule would have to be strongly based on the highest coveted printed literature as Russ stated The Encyclopedia of the Colors of United States Postage Stamps by Roy H. White would be the go to in expertising this stamp.

I was just seeing if maybe there was something less cumbersome and expensive. I have had one on my Santa wish list, well at least I did not receive a lump of coal.
About the #64 and how it has evolved into all the different shades. In 1861 the color pink was chosen for the new issue of the 3c stamps. Because of problems with the color not being stable it was decided to add the color rose to the pink and thus all the various shade evolved. This all took place in a short time span from Aug 1861 through Jan 1862. After this point the browns and reds started be introduced. Another issue with the pigeon blood is it's rarity there was never a true standard developed for this shade. This has lead to some confusion with certified stamps. When side by side comparisons where made it was found that two shade that were being called pigeon blood they were from the deeper end of the lavender pink and carmine pink shades.

I don't know if others' are familiar with Richard Morris' color guides, but I purchased the "Three Cents Washington 1861-1862" from Phil Bansner a few months ago. I just checked and it is not on his site now, although other color guides are.

It is a folder with a few pages of literature, explaining how over 50 shades of the 1861 3c have been identified, and then ranks 14 of the colors according to rarity. Here it also states that "Pigeon Blood" has been expertized from 2 colors: "Lavender Pink" and "Carmine Pink".

It then also contains 12 color tiles for identifying some of the colors. I'm red-green blind, so I have a really difficult time with color, but it is a relatively-inexpensive resource (I spent about $20) for it. BTW, I did get a good cert for a 64 from Bill Weiss a couple of weeks ago....I purchased the stamp-- didn't find it

Well I guess Santa came a bit early this year. My loving wife (Stella) just presented me with the 4 volume set of the Roy White, Encyclopedia of the Colors of United States Postage Stamps. She said that she got a good deal on ebay and they have an inscription from Mr. White. I just wonder how good a deal she got, even at that I can't wait to receive them.

PS: While I like the Swedish Tiger, I believe the Pigeon Blood he shows is from the Carmine Pink shades.
