I have a couple of questions about this cover. Hopefully someone can enlighten me.The cachet seems to have been stamped on after the stamps were applied as it goes over the stamps. Is this a common practice? Would this be a handmade FDC?.Thanks to all.

Not a terribly uncommon occurance David. Alot of times people would make sure that they got the FDC cancel and then send their cover off somewhere to have the cachet applied. The important part being the first day cancellation. Great cover by the way!

Looks like you have a Foreign Air Mail First Flight 27 (FAM 27) that would be identified as F27-50 at this link (New York to Basra, Iraq):
