This came in yesterdays local dealings. Was honolulu the cancelling location for all of these and also never thought of before but the time on the cancel is 9AM , Would this time stay consistant for cancelling all the first day issues or if at 10AM and still more to cancel would it had to have been changed. Contained within is a letter from Norton Internationa Inc to the engineering manager at General Electric in Canada outlining a brief history of the stars and stripes as well as welcoming Alaska 1959 and Hawaii 1960 to become the 49th and 50th stars on old Glory.
LB I can sense your radar twitching before I even post this . Do you have this one? If not I have a feeling this will be travelling very soon.

July 4, 1960 at Honolulu, Hawaii was the official First Day of Issue for the above stamp. It makes sense, since the entire purpose of the flag issue was the change from the 49 to 50 star flag because of the admission of Hawaii as a State on that date. Some of the cancels on First Day Covers do indicate a time, although I don't think there is any difference between an earlier or later time stamp as long as the date is correct. (I have some early First Day Covers that show times as early a 1 AM and as late as 9 PM ... so they do commonly exist.)

The Artcraft Cacheted First Day Cover you have scanned is a relatively common one and carries a minimum catalog value of $1.

Incidentally, that is Scott #1153 and a total of 820,900 covers were processed with the First Day of Issue cancellation.

Relatively speaking 820,900 seems a fairly small number . Love to hate FDC's they are so nice and usually well done yet only hold personal value . Maybe one day they will be better appreciated . Not concerned with the value but if that doesn't increase the demand certainly won't either.

Actually most of the 1960 first day covers had a run of about 350,000 to 550,000 covers cancelled, so your example was one of the higher number of first day cancels produced for an issue that year.

One notable exception was the 4-cent Boy Scouts stamp (#1145) for which 1.4 million first day cancels were produced.
