Cover and stamp are nothing special, but the letter could be a little quest for the amateur historians here!

From great news, the writer sure changes tone and begins speaking of death. This is a very 19th century letter in content. People evidently did think like this.

Who noticed that on the cover the notation "split grill"?

rohumpy - I really don't know about the "split grill" notation... probably one of the previous owners. I can make you a closer scan of the grill, if you want to see it.

smauggie - from the pic, I can see that they have a really nice library... I can bet is a very special atmosphere in it!
