Going through my cover collection I re-discovered this beauty. It has a circular town cancel from Owego, NY with "V" (5 cent) paid marker. It's the contents that make it so interesting.

BTW, I think I have FINALLY figured out my scanner!

Artlaunier, I noticed you managed to get BOTH envelope scans on the ONE post. I use Photobucket and have never successfully did same. When I paste the second Image the first always disappears, embarrassing.

I only achieve 2 picture posts from "MP Navigator", a Canon program, if the images are small and under 100K at 400 dpi scanner setting.

This "could be" the addressee of your cover, but you may want to do some more research to confirm.

In quickly searching for "S.G. Hathaway, Jr." of Elmira, NY, I come up with a Lt.-Colonel Samuel G. Hathaway, Jr. of Elmira who was in charge of the 141st NY Regiment during the Civil War. It suggests he was a lawyer and was also affiliated with the firm Diven, Hathaway & Woods of Elmira, NY, was a member of the NY Legislature and was a candidate for Congress (not elected).

This photo is from the Library of Congress Civil War Collection:

Thanks wt1, it'll do until I find otherwise, even if he was a Yankee. Seriously, I truly love the way you find out about people from a cover and provide information about them. Remarkable work.

Whoa! That is possibly the COOLEST thing I've seen on here yet! That someone can find out that much about your cover/contents...opens up a whole 'nother universe! (I apologize for my northern slang in advance ..LOL)

finches,

It took a VERY long time for me to figure out how to use my scanner! I think I have it down now and will re-scan many of my images.

What I did was scan the cover saving it as a .jpg, crop just the cover, insuring its under 100K in size. I then posted the image like you did, then I put another line (blank) under the image and uploaded another .jpg file. Really, all I did was follow the direction given by other members of the forum. Thanks guys!

Here's another scanner trick that might be helpful to some. I have an HP Multifunction Scanner/Printer/Fax. The software will scan the image and create a jpg file quite easily, but the file size is quite large, even when scanning just a single stamp.

I have found that a quick way to reduce the file size is to open it in MS Windows "Paint" (right click and select "Opens With" and select "Paint"). Once opened, I immediately save and replace it as a jpg file. The file size will usually come down 20% or 30% or even 40% with just that simple action.
