I'm having a problem trying to ID the center precancel. Any help out there? Left one is 232, the right one is 703, the center one is ? Frankie

Fincbob2451, You are correct, but Frankie is looking for the type of precancel overprint.
Frankie, Here's your answer the 1st stamp in a 51, the second a 256, finally the third is 703.
Confirm, 51 letters are 2.7mm, 13mm between lines, 256 letters are 2.5mm, 12.5mm between lines, 1mm between city/state. Only way to know is to measure.

Would you kindly explain how you came up with the answer of a 256 for the second stamp? According to this illustration, the 256 does not have as much space between city and state as the scanned example. Maybe I have obsolete information, but has something changed in the catalog listings? Also, is there a minor variety between using "TEX." versus' "TEXAS" as the State name? I must admit I tried to look up the stamp when the post first appeared and I never would have remotely guessed a 256 because of those differences. |

I see that I miss spoke here I knew that it should be a 232 but sidetracked myself. 232 letters 2.5mm, 1.1mm between city/state, lines 12-13.5mm apart, with the note that the state may be spelled out.
The measurements between between 256/703 are the same, both block lettering, only difference is is the 703 has narrower letters. To confirm find out if you have a 703 from another city that does not have a 256 and compare simular letters that should help make it clear. |

Thanks to this post, it prompted me to look up my Texas precancels. I found at least five (5) different Type 232's from 1/2-cent to 50-cent denominations for Houston, Texas! The information you can get on SCF posts like this is wonderful! |

Using Chasa's guide as an example, I came up with these ID's for the Houston precancels in my collection. Do I have them right? The only real question I have is whether the last stamp is really an L-4 type. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks. |
