Art,

In the spirit of full disclosure, I didn't have a clue who the school was named after until you posted this thread and I started to do a little digging. Thanks!

Steve

On a side note for those interested in WCE history a must read is Erik Larson's Devil In The White City. It intertwined the history from building to closing of the WCE and the US's first known serial killer (whose name escapes me). The author did painstakingly detailed research on real facts with little fiction. It is a great page turner.

Just another bit of information concerning the Columbian Tickets. If you have any of these did you ever wonder what the numbers and/or letters were for? See below.

I did and just found out this past week that they were used to prevent counterfeiting of the tickets. It seems that they would use a different letter or letter/number combination for that day alone. Consequently, there must be more than a couple hundred face different tickets. I gave some thought about going after all face different but no, I don't think so.

WOW -- hard to believe this elaborate design and engraving could be counterfeited at all.

StampLover,

Great Ticket! The "A" signifies that this ticket was part of the second run of tickets. Initially, they only printed 60,000 of each of the portrait tickets, ran out and printed more. I do not know how many were printed in the second run. However, it was during the second run that they also printed the Franklin and Handel tickets. The Handel ticket being the major key to the series and then the Franklin being the minor key. Personally, I think they are all key players and the specialty, children's and other event tickets being just as cool to collect.

Stamperdude, that book is a great read. It left me with wanting to know more. It is hard to describe, but I think it almost puts the reader in that time and place. You feel like you are there.

Hey StamperDude!

I went to Amazon and read the 1st few pages then ordered it. Sad to say that it didn't arrive before I hit the road again. It should be there when I get back this week. Looking forward to the read. Thanks for the heads up!

On another note, I located a copy of a 1981 reference work on the Columbian Exposition. This is the only published reference work on the tickets that I have come across so I'm looking forward to it.

Within it is the explanation of the numbers & letters on the Day of Sale tickets, quantities printed etc. The collector who published the work did the research on his own and did a pretty good job at it. However, after 30 years I'm sure some things have changed such as values etc. I'll share some info when I get back, I meant to take it with me on this trip but forgot it.

I was aware of the stock certificates but have never seen one for sale! What auction site, if I may ask, I might go after it myself.

WOW! He is very proud of that certificate! I put in an offer, what I thought was more reasonable, and was immediately rejected. Looks like it'll be around for awhile.
